Al Jazeera: As a Backup Method

After visiting Al Jazeera's web site for the first time I have decided to read it on a regular basis! As any other journalistic source a hint of bias is bound to be included on the articles. But I must admit it is nice to be able to read about what is happening around the world from another perspective. It is a fact that American news sources are manipulated to fit the government's idea of what we should get to hear and how we should get to hear it. I am not trying to say that other governments don't do so as well, but they do see things from a different point of view. One of the articles I read talked about the UK's troops leaving Bosnia. After reading it, I went directly to CNN to look for an article on the same event. For the most part, both articles were very neutral on their reports and seemed to provide similar information. The most significant difference I saw, was the mentioning of "the 'overstretch' plaguing Britain's armed forces", which was only mentioned in Al Jazeera's article. CNN approached the action as a consequence of Bosnia "becoming increasingly safe" and did not say much more about the issue. On the contrary, Al Jazeera portrayed the event as a necessity of troops for the British government. It is clear that both sources are biased in a way, but I think reading different sources regardless of their limitations is the only way to obtain a more open-minded and well-rounded perception of the issue. Perhaps many won't agree with my decision of reading an Arabic news source, but should we rely solely on an American one?

This could not have been said any better. I think it's great that you chose to explore this website. I've never heard of it, but I love hearing about new things. I also think it's interesting that information is in English (right?). I never would have thought that. I agree that some information from our Government may be biased. But, by being aware of other international resources, we may also find out things that have happened that we haven't heard the whole story about. While that may not always be true, it's very interesting (as you said) to see things from another perspective.

Great post! :)

I think it is better that you went to both sources. Forget reading one and believing exactly what they say. The only way to get a whole view of what is happening is to check out both. It is nice to see what both have to say, and see if anyone is stretching the truth or avoiding the subject. I could imagine that they would both be bias in there own way, but lets face it they are both trying to keep there countries or allies looking like the good ones.
